Indian Bridal Wear and Fashion by designer Ami Matona | London | UK
Ami Matona's label 'ami-london' was launched in February 2004 and from the start has taken the Asian Fashion world by storm.
She decided to call her label 'AMI' to signify her involvement through the whole creative process right up to the finished product. Spending alot of time with each customer helps her create something perfect for each individual.
Although of Gujarati descent, Ami was born in Zambia where she experienced a very different upbringing. Her Father's profession as an Architect took her to many parts of the world, especially Asia. Where she has been greatly influenced by the dress, jewellery, make up and colours of cultures and traditions.
Ami's interest in fashion started when she was just 13. Her interest eventually led her to study fashion design at Central St Martins and London College of Fashion, where she graduated in 2000.
During her study period , Ami carried out a year long apprenticeship with London based designers Joe Casely-Hayford and Katherine Hamnett.
Ami's first job in the industry was as a shoe designer, designing ladies, mens and kids shoes for UK Retailers. She then moved on to design Ladies Jerseywear and Knitwear for UK High Street Retailers.
While working full time she took on many private commisions from her family and friends including bridal dresses. The success of this led her to pursue a label of her own specialising in Indian Fashion with the aim to create beautiful embroideries and fabrics combined with shapes influenced by western fashion. In February 2004 'ami-london' launched its first collection.
